MACHINE MINI #1 – Soul Food Buffet

MACHINE begins its 2010 programming with MACHINE Mini # 1  a Soul Food Buffet on Sunday, 17 January 2010. This event is part of MACHINE Gastronomy Program. MACHINE will prepare and discuss the history of this style of cooking and its connection(s) to African and European styles of preparation  followed by buffet.  Traditional dishes like cornbread, red beans with rice and gumbo will be served while also adding a few Soul Food twist to traditional Belgian foods.

MACHINE Mini#1 begins at 17h with social followed by discussion and dinner. MACHINE ask that you please reserve your space by return e-mail no later then midnight Friday 15 January 2010 .

Short History of Soul-Food

Soul-Food derived from southern dishes during the American slavery era. It’s an African American cuisine and is also referred to as Southern or comfort food and serves as the foundation for many African-American families but has worked it’s way into American cuisine and and is popular worldwide. You will find soul food restaurants in Japan, India, Germany and yes, Belgium. Although often criticized for it’s high fat and cholesterol content Soul Food cooking over the last 25 years has developed into a more healthy style of preparing the meals without losing what makes Soul Food special…the flavor which is how the food will be prepared for this presentation

Please join MACHINE for “Everything is Possibly Possible”. The featured artists for this event are Dialogist-Kantor. Toni Geirlandt and Carlos Montalvo (Dialogist-Kantor) are known for their practice of community collaboration through multiples, installation, actions and group activity. For “Everything is Possibly Possible” Dialogist-Kantor will show a selection of objects and posters with various actions throughout the event. This includes a panel discussion lead by Dialogist-Kantor on the topic of “Neo Digestive Dada”. The project(s) for MACHINE follows their exhibition at Musee des Arts Comtemporains- Site du Grand Hornu and various other activities.

“Everything is Possibly Possible” begins at 14h with artists social followed by 16h panel discussion. Soups, sandwiches and salad will be served after. A lot of things went on since Collision Zone was first presented at the opening of the 53rd Venice Biennale. We have further explored the dynamics at work in the Mediterranean. New movies were filmed and edited. The multifaceted installation was transformed for this live thing. We also joined forces with Otobong Nkanga to enhance and defy Y.E.R.M.O.’s heavy and beautiful music.

Collision Zone Live will mix field recordings of natural and urban sounds with improvised music by Y.E.R.M.O. and intuitive vocals by Otobong Nkanga. The show will include large screen projections of videos recorded at the edge of Europe: satellites, radars and surveillance patrols, brutalist architecture, informal human settlements, geological imagery of mountains and caves, steaming volcanic craters, insect hunters and their prey…
